Andre Cantelmo Photography
http://www.twoeyesopen.ca/wp A hobbyist photographer who trained as a commercial shooter, managed a portrait studio for a bit and struck out on his own to attempt commercial projects in a small community for a few years. Started a family, bought a house and more camera and computing equipment and then came to realize that photography was just too damned difficult to deal with as a commercial venture. So hobby it is. The Revolutionary War created massive devastation in the colonies. Nowhere was this more evident than in New Jersey. Robert Field, a local business man and patriot, headed the Committee of Correspondence in an attempt to gain representation in British Parliament. In 1775 Robert drowned in the Delaware River under mysterious circumstances, leaving his young wife Mary to defend their home against British and then Hessian invasion.
Over the next two hundred and thirty-seven years the Field family home housed entrepreneurs and a U.S Senator, as well as rum runners. It was thrice abandoned and once used as a bordello. For nearly seventy years it served the public as an upscale restaurant know as Glenk's White Hill Mansion Restaurant Bar and Grill, The Mansion and finally the White Hill Mansion Restaurant.
The Newburyport Art Association was founded in 1948. The NAA is dedicated to promoting and exhibiting our members’ work, to providing art education for students of all ages and skills, and to keeping the visual arts accessible for students in our local schools and for special needs adults.
Today, the NAA has become the cornerstone of greater Newburyport’s vibrant arts scene with 600 artist and non-artist members from around the region. Artists exhibit work in a full calendar of open, juried, invitational, featured artist and interest group shows throughout the year. In addition, the NAA offers a full calendar of studio classes and workshops for children, teens and adults, and we support two important community outreach programs – ArtLink & OpArt. ArtLink is the umbrella name for all NAA programming developed in partnership with area schools each academic year. OpArt is a longstanding collaboration with Opportunity Works of Newburyport – the NAA provides art education for Opportunity Work clients, as well as retail, exhibition, and field trip opportunities.
The NAA is located along Newburyport’s waterfront, just steps from the center of town, in a historic 1795 brick building housing three galleries that are open year-round to the general public. Admission is free. Art exhibited in shows and featured in our Gift Shop is for sale.
